Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has promised to support Sam Allardyce as the Sunderland boss stands on the brink of landing the England job.

Allardyce is set to be recommended to the Football Association board at a meeting on Thursday, with a three-man panel having identified the 61-year-old as the best candidate to succeed Roy Hodgson.

Mourinho and Allardyce have clashed in the past, with the Portuguese accusing the then West Ham manager of playing football from the 19th century following a goalless draw with Chelsea in 2014.

Allardyce responded by saying I don t give a s**** to be honest , but he appears to have found an unlikely ally as he prepares to take the reins of the national team.

Lorient manager Christian Gourcuff would not stand in the way of striker Jeremie Aliadiere if another club made an offer for him.

The former Arsenal and Middlesborough forward has been linked with a return to the Premier League and Gourcuff admits that the 30-year-old is not happy at the Stade du Moustoir.

Aliadiere scored 18 goals in all competitions last season but Gourcuff does not want to keep a player who wants to play elsewhere.

Jeremie is not happy and I am annoyed with that, he told L Equipe.

Wigan midfielder Lee Cattermole has agreed a six-million-pound (9.9 million dollar) move to Premier League rivals Sunderland.

The 21-year-old agreed a four-year deal and will make his debut in Saturday s Premier League opener against Bolton.

The former Middlesbrough youth team player, signed by former Latics boss Steve Bruce for Wigan in a 3.5-million-pound deal in July 2008, becomes Sunderland s fifth signing of the summer after Darren Bent, Lorik Cana, Fraizer Campbell and Paulo Da Silva.

The 22-year-old turned down a new deal from former club Hearts to move back to Australia in 2010 and was part of Ange Postecoglou s Roar squad that won back-to-back A-League titles.

But after failing to make an appearance this season, new Roar coach Mike Mulvey has announced the decision to let Visconte go, given the depth of quality in Brisbane s squad.
