It has been a fairly typical transfer window for Tottenham so far, with a huge number of players being linked with the club but most of those rumours falling flat. However, that is looking increasingly likely to change, with new arrivals Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Matt Doherty perhaps being joined by an eye-catching duo from Real Madrid. Sergio Reguilón is expected to sign for Spurs this week, following a fine season on loan at Sevilla, and a return for Gareth Bale appears a real possibility.
No team should be judged on one game, but the manner of Spurs’ defeat to Everton at the weekend suggested there is big room for improvement. For all his merits as a dependable defender, Ben Davies’ lack of attacking threat leaves the side imbalance…
A “dominant and dangerous” robber has been convicted of being part of a four-strong gang who smashed into the home of the former England footballer Ashley Cole and threatened to cut off his fingers.
The former Arsenal, Chelsea and Derby defender told police he thought “now I am going to die” as he recalled how the masked raiders tied his hands behind his back despite him holding his young daughter in January 2020.
Nottingham crown court heard that Kurtis Dilks was the only one of the gang responsible for the robbery to be caught after his DNA was recovered on the cable ties used to restrain Cole and his partner, Sharon Canu.
The 35-year-old courier claimed his DNA was found on the c…
The Football Association will vote against controversial reforms that would allow the Uefa president, Aleksander Ceferin, to run for an unprecedented fourth term.
In what will be seen as a rare breaking of ranks, England will signal its opposition at the governing body’s annual congress in Paris on Thursday. All of the continent’s 55 member states are to vote on the statute changes and, while they are expected to pass overwhelmingly, the FA intends to make a stand amid widespread disquiet over Ceferin’s plans.
It is possible that the FA will be a lone dissenting voice when votes are cast at Maison de la Mutualité. Few around Uefa anticipate a rebellion totalling more than two or three, with a Ukrainian federa…

When a team drafts a running back in the first round of the NFL Draft, everyone expects him to carry a heavy workload for his new team (especially when his legs look like tree trunks), but Pittsburgh’s Cam Heyward might be expecting a little bit too much out of his new teammate, Najee Harris. This morning, while being interviewed for Good Morning Football, Heyward said of Harris: “I think, as a defender, we’re most excited to have him. Having a guy like that that can tote the rock 30 to 40 times a game really puts an ease for the defense.” EXCUSE ME?!?!?! 30 to 40 times?! I’d hate to break it to you, Cam, but Harris won’t get anywhere close to that. In 2020, Tennessee’s Derrick Henry led the NFL in rushing attempts with 378, over 60 more than the next closest player, Da…
The Chicago Cubs placed outfielder Seiya Suzuki on the 10-day injured list Monday due to a right oblique strain. The Cubs recalled outfielder Alexander Canario from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move. To start his third season in MLB after moving over from Japan, Suzuki leads the Cubs with 18 hits and 13 RBIs through 15 games, with three home runs and a .305 batting average. The 29-year-old, who played Sunday against the Seattle Mariners and went 2-for-4, has batted .277 with 37 homers and 133 RBIs over 264 career games since joining the Cubs in 2022. Canario, 23, made his major league debut last season and got into six games for the Cubs. He went 5-for-17 (.294) with six RBIs, one home run, one triple and one double. Canario has batted .269 so far this season at Iowa. —Fi…
Notes from a day in baseball: • 1. LaLaWood Fables. In Major League baseball terms, it was like your autistic team manager draining six three-pointers in a high school game. That's pretty much what happened on Monday, as the Dodgers hit back-to-back-to-back-to-back home runs (that's four) to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, and then won it on Nomar Garciaparra's walkoff two-run homer in the 10th, 11-10 over San Diego. The win places LA back in the first in the NL West by a half-game over the robed ones. All of this in front of 55,831 at Dodger Stadium, and after San Diego had retaken the lead, 10-9, in the top of the 10th. Our tater parade in the ninth included Jeff Kent, J.D. Drew, Russell Martin and Marlon Anderson; the latter two on two straight pitches by Tr…
Film buffs will be thrilled to know that Amazon is currently offering great deals on several Criterion Collection Blu-rays and DVDs. Some of them are backordered, which means Amazon will hide their price and default to a third party seller with immediate availability. If this is the case, just make sure you check the buying options and find the best price, regardless of shipping time. [ Criterion Sale] At this point, you don't need me to tell you how great this camera is. I will tell you though that it's the lowest price we've seen on it that didn't require a paid REI membership. [ GoPro Hero3+ Black, $330] We've seen slightly lower prices on this set in the past, but if you need your Bond fix, $125 for 23 movies is still a great deal. [ Bond 50, $125] …
What's your greatest fear? There's a very good chance you said "dying alone," because that's pretty much the worst way to end a life. No legacy, no testament to the things you've accomplished, no hope that anything you've done will outlive you. Very few of us die as alone as Lonesome George, who passed away this summer at the ripe old age of "more than 100." George was a Pinta Island tortoise, the very last one on earth. On June 24, George's keeper at the Galapagos National Park found him "stretched out in the direction of his watering hole with no signs of life." This ignominious end is maybe the greatest metaphor for death—one more banal chore of existence, denied by an inevitable, inconvenient end. But for most of us, when…
Kelby Tomlinson might not have prevented the Giants’ bullpen from blowing Monday night’s contest against the Braves, but the gangly 25-year-old rookie did his best with his only at-bat of the game. Sunday night, Tomlinson found out he was being called up and told his wife Tiffany. She flew from San Jose to Atlanta Monday morning and went to the game with her father, Bob Prater. Tomlinson didn’t appear until the 12th inning, when he was called to pinch hit. He lined a single to center field for his first MLB hit, and Tiffany was ecstatic. Their cheers are audible in the video: Tomlinson ended up scoring on Buster Posey’s single for an 8-7 lead, but Atlanta won 9-8 in the bottom of the same inning with Adonis Garcia’s two-run walkoff homer. Despite the loss, Tiffany was still ov…
